Silent Sky (Concept)
Overview
Pictured below are 3D renderings and a rough sketch of Wilson's concept design for Lauren Gunderson's Silent Sky, which were completed as part of a class project during his time in undergrad. The grayscale renderings make it difficult to tell, however the flying panels which represent the dome of the observatory are not screens or walls, but are instead floating chalkboards adorned with equations. Through the subtle use of ultraviolet lighting techniques, it would be possible to make these chalk characters light up the sky during the moments in which the stage directions call for stars to brighten the set. It is also present in the sketch that flats be dressed with a frenzy of papers in a peak state of organized chaos. The goal is that these concepts place a heavy emphasis on the work of Henrietta; a realized set should recognize the greatness of her work as both a celebration of scientific achievement and also an acknowledgment of its all consuming toll on her life. Even in moments when the desks slip away and Henrietta finds herself away from the observatory, she remains surrounded by her work on all sides.
Elevations/Groundplans
Below you can see images of Wilson's ground plans and elevations. The telescope exists for the audience as it did for the real Henrietta; persistently and naggingly present and yet ever out of reach.
Reference Photos
To the left you can see reference photos that informed many of my creative decisions, or are in line with the styles I am trying to seek for the set.
Arcadia (Concept)
Elevations/Groundplans
Yet another school project, Wilson's concept work for Tom Stoppard's Arcadia remains special to him as it was his first time creating an original artwork on Vectorworks! To learn more about the decisions behind Wilson's design for Arcadia click here to access a pdf of his design concept.
